Dự án kéo dài đến tháng 12-2018, mục tiêu là xây dựng Trung tâm chăm sóc mắt thân thiện với trẻ em tại Bệnh viện Mắt tỉnh Bình Định, nhằm phát triển dịch vụ chăm sóc mắt cho trẻ em trong tỉnh và các tỉnh lân cận.

Dự án có tổng vốn lên tới trên 1,2 triệu USD, trong đó tổ chức Orbis tài trợ gần 980.000 USD.
Theo thông tin từ Orbis, dự án nhằm xây dựng đội ngũ nhân lực chăm sóc mắt trẻ em chất lượng cao tại Bình Định, làm giảm mù lòa và tình trạng giảm thị lực ở trẻ. Đồng thời xây dựng năng lực tầm soát và điều trị một số bệnh khó, như tầm soát bệnh võng mạc ở trẻ sinh non tại Bình Định.
Trong dự án, nhiều chương trình đào tạo cho bác sĩ nhãn khoa cũng đã được tổ chức.
Trong những ngày đầu tháng 6 này là chương trình đào tạo của Bệnh viện bay Orbis lần đầu tiên có mặt ở Bình Định, tập trung đào tạo thực hành lâm sàng các bệnh về mắt như Glô-côm, đục thủy tinh thể, điều trị võng mạc nội khoa, phẫu thuật lác/lé cho trẻ em…
Theo bác sĩ Phí Duy Tiến (Bệnh viện Mắt TPHCM), chương trình đào tạo của bệnh viện bay khá mới mẻ với bác sĩ VN, với các giảng viên quốc tế đều là các chuyên gia hàng đầu.
Ông Tiến cho biết ở VN can thiệp chưa được nhiều về bệnh lý đáy mắt của trẻ sinh non. Hiện các thiết bị điều trị về mắt đã có nhiều tiến bộ, trên 10 năm trước đường mổ phaco 8-9mm, nhưng nay thiết bị được Alcon cung cấp cho bệnh viện bay cho phép đường mổ chỉ 2,2mm.
Đường mổ nhỏ giúp thời gian lành bệnh nhanh hơn, ít biến dạng nhãn cầu và chất lượng phục hồi tốt hơn.
Tuy nhiên ông Tiến cũng cho biết VN đang gặp một số vấn đề như tỷ lệ trẻ mắc tật khúc xạ gia tăng, chưa có đủ bác sĩ chuyên khoa mắt nên nhiều bệnh lý chưa điều trị được ở các địa phương ngoài Hà Nội và TP.HCM.
